Latest round of Disabled Persons Grant will support our increasing level of need

Independent TD for Offaly Carol Nolan has warmly welcomed confirmation she has received from the James Browne that Offaly County Council is set to receive €712,803 in a department contribution to carry out adaptations, extensions, and other improvements to its existing social housing stock. The Council is also required to make a €79,200 contribution, which brings the total funding to €800k.
This funding which is being allocated under the Disabled Persons Grant is designed to ensure homes are adapted to allow older people and those with disabilities to continue living independently, while also providing funding for major modifications such as extensions to relieve overcrowding:
“Home adaptation applications are one of the most common issues that I come across in constituency work and they are numbers are increasing all the time. That is why I warmly welcome this confirmation from the department and the Minister,” said Deputy Nolan.
“This specific scheme funds essential home modifications for people with mobility or disability needs, including minor adaptations like stair-lifts, ramps, and grab rails, larger projects such as extensions to reduce overcrowding as well as creating accessible spaces like a downstairs bedroom, en-suite, or wet-room.”
“As I understand it from the department the funding will now also extend to Improvement Works in Lieu scheme which allows works to be carried out on a privately owned house where the applicant has been approved for social housing. That is very welcome given the enormous and expanding crisis we are facing with respect to housing,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
