Student Union theatrics must not replace critical economic dialogue with the US

03-07-2025

Independent TD for Offaly Carol Nolan has said while the freedom to protest about any current policy of the United States is important “Irish politicians should not underestimate the necessity of maintaining civil and respectful dialogue with a key economic partner.”

Deputy Nolan was speaking after she met with the newly appointed U.S Ambassador Ed Walsh at the United States Embassy’s Independence Day Celebration at the Ambassador’s Residence in the Phoenix Park, Dublin:

“It is vital that there continues to be ongoing, open and positive engagement with the US administration given the cultural, historical and economic ties that we and generations before us have with America.”

“We have more investment in this country from America than any other country. We cannot jeopardise that. That is why constructive engagement is now more important than ever, especially in the context of upcoming trade tariffs and the international market uncertainty that this is creating.”

“I spoke with the Ambassador directly on this issue and warmly welcomed him to Ireland. Indeed, I sincerely hope that his appointment can be respected by those in Irish politics who seem to want the theatrics of student union politics to triumph over the kind of grown-up politics that we need at this critical juncture,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
